Owner Joan Cooling Noeller is a third-generation dance teacher in her family, her mother and grandmother both previously owning studios in Omaha and Council Bluffs. Joan’s love of teaching was woven into her early years, as she assisted her mother with the family business as well as studying gymnastics. After graduating from the University of Northern Iowa with a Master of Arts Teaching Degree, Joan taught communication, theatre, and dance at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL, and Central Methodist College in Fayette, MO, before returning to Iowa to teach and ultimately open her studio in Vinton.
Joan’s studio is unique because you will find Joan present to teach each and every class. Additionally, we have highly qualified and enthusiastic assistants on hand. At the Cooling Dance Center, we genuinely care about your child and his or her progress.
Classes are offered as follows:
This class for 3-year olds introduces the basic concepts of rhythm, tempo, energy, and space in a fun and joyful manner for the little ones. The pace is fast as we move from barre exercises and simple ballet to creative dance around the room. The class includes tumbling, stretching, and also singing in the 30 minutes. These children love performing in both the holiday and spring recitals, delighting the crowds with their energy and smiles. One recital costume is ordered for the spring recital.
Tap is introduced to the older preschooler as we include 45 minutes of dance and tumbling. Children look forward to “moving up” into tap shoes and hearing the sounds and rhythms they can make at this level. Simple song and dance routines are introduced in addition to expressive and creative dance. These children perform one routine in the December recital and two routines (tap and ballet) in the spring show. The basics of stage presentation are introduced to build confidence and poise. One recital costume is ordered and is used in both routines.
Children in this age group continue with tap, ballet, and the introduction of jazz in the 45-minute class. The variety of dance styles make this class interesting and fast-moving, while at the same time allows us to connect the basics of dance technique from one style to another. Tumbling is included in the form of stretching and cartwheels (at the end of class) as time permits. Children at this level are growing rapidly in ability and stage presence, and working more on timing (rhythm) and use of the entire body, arms, head and more to interpret the dance. One costume is ordered to be used for both of the spring recital routines. These children also love performing in our annual holiday recital.
A one-hour class of tap/ballet/jazz keeps this age group progressing. Many of these students find that the dance class enhances their interest and abilities in sports and music activities. We work on agility, stretching, teamwork, footwork, and poise, not unlike the sports and music arenas. These children may choose also to participate in spring dance competition or other dance opportunities around the community as their talents and confidence grow. These children perform three routines in the spring recital, and one routine in the holiday show. Two costumes are ordered.
A one-hour class of tap/ballet/lyrical dance set to age-appropriate lyrics and music will expose your teen to healthy exercise, teamwork, coordination and development, and confidence in the critical years between elementary and college. We make sure your teen has value-based lyrics and modest costuming, at the same time challenging each child to perform with accuracy and poise. We take pride in our large enrollment of teens, and in their well-performed routines in the holiday and spring recitals. Two costumes are ordered.
This 30 minute class for advanced students exposes the older child to classical ballet through dancing on toe. Barre and floor exercises and simple routines are incorporated to give the advanced dancer the beginnings of pointe. Girls perform in the holiday and spring recitals. One costume is ordered.
This one-hour class focuses on high-energy precision dance and acrobatics. Arm and kick movements, facial expressions, and pom style dance are emphasized as well as basic tumbling stunts and stretching. Exciting performances at local high school sports events are included with this class. One costume is ordered.
This class for your 1 and 2 yr. olds is available in occasional 6-week sessions throughout the year. The child and caregiver take class together, and the emphasis is on developing a love for movement and music. Group movement, cheerful music, and simple moves that little ones can achieve are emphasized. There is also a tumbling section with this 30-minute class. Recital routine is optional.
This class for your elementary age boys is offered in occasional 6-week sessions throughout the year, and during the summer. The boys love the agility and strength training that compliments their sports training. We burn a lot of energy with handstands, flips, cartwheels, and more in this 45- minute class. Non-performing.
